According to initial study results, the corona vaccine from the US pharmaceutical company Moderna has an effectiveness of 96 percent in adolescents.

The study participants between the ages of twelve and 17 would have generally tolerated the vaccine well, the company said on Thursday.

"So far, no serious safety concerns have been identified."

The study enrolled 3,235 adolescents, two-thirds of whom received the vaccine and one-third received a placebo.

In the course of the study, twelve participants fell ill with Covid-19 from a point in time two weeks after the first vaccination dose, explained Moderna.

The Moderna vaccine is currently approved in Europe and the USA from the age of 18, among others.

The vaccine from the Biontech / Pfizer alliance is approved from the age of 16, and the companies have also submitted applications for approval from the age of twelve.

Canada became the first country in the world to approve the Biontech / Pfizer vaccine on Wednesday for children and adolescents aged twelve and over.
