• The L214 association unveiled horror images from an Intermarché slaughterhouse located in Finistère.

  • We see sows at the end of their life being mistreated, in a slaughterhouse ill-suited to their progress, forcing employees to use electric shocks.

  • An investigation was opened by the Quimper prosecutor's office and the establishment was temporarily closed.

It still took a shock video to make things happen. On Wednesday, the Quimper prosecutor's office announced the opening of an investigation after the broadcast of the L214 video showing the deplorable conditions of treatment of animals in an Intermarché slaughterhouse. Based in Briec, in Finistère, the establishment of the Agromousquetaires group has been pinned down for its abuse of “cull” sows, in particular due to poorly designed facilities. "This slaughterhouse will only reopen when all the light is shed on its practices," said Wednesday the secretary general of the prefecture of Finistère, Christophe Marx.

On Wednesday, the animal rights association unveiled horror images showing sows in panic, agglutinated in too narrow tunnels.

To help them move forward, employees use electric prods, which they sometimes stick in their eyes or anus.

“The images are shocking and the management of the Société briécoise d'attage understands the emotion they can arouse in the public.

As soon as these images were taken into account today, the management of the Société briécoise d'attage decided, as a precautionary measure, to temporarily suspend the production line concerned, ”the group reacted in a press release.

"Serious breaches of animal protection rules"

In addition to the launch of a "certain number of works", the slaughterhouse will have to provide guarantees in terms of "training of its staff" and "ability to monitor all practices", added Yvan Lobjoit, departmental director of protection of populations (DDPP, veterinary services), mentioning the possibility for the company to set up a video surveillance system. In 2016, however, an audit was carried out in this slaughterhouse and several shortcomings had been revealed. "Nothing has been done since and these images prove it," said Sébastien Arsac, one of the spokespersons for L214. There are real structural problems and they are not resolved. The employees do what they can and we don't want to overwhelm them. The prefecture had mentioned "unacceptable practices with serious breaches of animal protection rules".

"We cannot be behind every employee"

"The non-conformities identified since 2016, all minor, have been the subject of regulatory reminders to the company for the implementation of corrective actions", defended the prefecture on Tuesday evening, stressing that "compliance with the requirements in matters of animal protection is the responsibility of the slaughterer ”.

"We can not be behind each employee", explained Christophe Marx, assuring that the animal abuse put forward by L214 in this slaughterhouse had "never been noted by the services of the State".

L214 complains "for serious abuse committed against animals to the public prosecutor of Quimper and asks the justice to severely punish the management of the slaughterhouse, as well as the veterinary services of the department", indicates the association in its press release .
