The Düsseldorf Public Prosecutor's Office has brought charges against the alleged seller of the firearm used for the murder of the Kassel District President Walter Lübcke.

The 65-year-old Elmar J. is suspected of negligently causing the death of a person, the authorities said on Tuesday.

J. is said to have sold the weapon in 2016 to right-wing extremist Stephan E., who was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder at the end of January.

The Central Office for the Prosecution of Terrorism, located at the General Prosecutor's Office, also accused J. of trading in a firearm and ammunition.

In addition, there is suspicion of unauthorized possession of further ammunition.

J. is said to have had "unauthorized cartridges of various makes and calibres" which, according to the attorney general, were confiscated in June 2019.

The Paderborn Regional Court now has to decide whether to admit the indictment.

The 65-year-old accused from East Westphalia is reportedly at large.

J. was arrested after Lübcke's murder at the end of June 2019, but was released in mid-January 2020.

The Federal Court of Justice revoked the arrest warrant against J. at the time because there was no sufficient suspicion against him for aiding and abetting murder.

At the time, the Federal Prosecutor's office transferred the case to the Paderborn public prosecutor's office, which in turn submitted the case to the Düsseldorf Public Prosecutor's Office, which is responsible for the Central Office for the Persecution of Terrorism in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Düsseldorf authorities have now brought charges against J. for negligent homicide.

Lübcke was shot dead at close range on the night of June 2, 2019 at his home in Wolfhagen-Istha in North Hesse.

E. was sentenced to the maximum penalty by the Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt am Main in January.

The judges reserved the right to order preventive detention after the sentence had been served.

Markus H., who was acquitted of the allegation of psychological aid, was also accused in the process.
