During a one and a half month residency in Beirut, Ryōko Sekiguchi wanted to write the portrait of Beirut from the angle of the kitchen.

A delicate book on Lebanese flavors and dishes in a country shaken by the revolution and the big explosion of 2020.

Publicity

It was a commission from the Maison des Ecrivains de Beyrouth and its president, the writer Charif Majdalani: to write a book on the city, on the Lebanese capital.

An idea that immediately made the mouth water of

Ryōko Sekiguchi

, the daughter of a French-speaking Japanese cook and writer who lives in Paris, keen on gastronomy, human encounters and travel in the Mediterranean basin, in East and Asia.

She has therefore concocted a unique and mixed book, in which the scents of Lebanon mingle with Japanese flavors and the taste of the French language.

“961 hours in Beirut (and 321 accompanying dishes”) is not a cookbook.

Better than that, it's a cookbook.

Ryōko Sekiguchi's book is published by POL editions
