On April 28, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs held a press conference.

A reporter asked at the meeting. Some people said that Chinese pigs are imported and that local pigs are about to become extinct. What is the situation?

Chen Yaosheng, chief scientist of the National Pig Industry Technology System and director of the Expert Committee of the National Pig Genetic Improvement Program, responded that at present, the supply of breeding pigs in China is guaranteed to be based in the country.

In the past ten years, the country has imported an average of less than 10,000 breeding pigs per year, accounting for less than 10% of the core breeding population renewal ratio. A small amount of imports is mainly used to supplement resources, renew pedigrees and improve the performance of breeding pigs.

There are currently 83 local pig breeds in China, with good quality and good flavor. However, due to the fact that they eat more, grow slowly, and have a low lean meat rate, the scale of breeding continues to shrink and the resource population is shrinking.

For this reason, China has built 62 national-level local pig breeding farms and protection areas, realized the protection of pig genetic materials, and used local pig breeds to breed 30 new breeds and supporting lines.
