• The national anti-terrorism prosecutor, Jean-François Ricard, gave some details about the investigation during a press conference.

  • The assailant stabbed the police officer twice before being shot.

  • Its radicalization "seems hardly questionable" for the anti-terrorism prosecutor.

Since this Sunday, five people among his relatives have been in police custody.

Two days after the terrorist knife attack that cost the life of an agent from the Rambouillet police station (Yvelines), the national anti-terrorism prosecutor, Jean-François Ricard, gave some details about the investigation during a press conference .

Here is what we know.

The attack

The attack took place at 2:25 p.m. on Friday, in the entrance hall of the Rambouillet police station.

The assailant, Jamel G., stabbed Stéphanie M., a police officer, twice, one in the abdomen and one in the throat.

He shouted “allahu akbar” at the time of the attack.

A colleague of the victim responded with a shot at Jamel G., the latter refused to drop his knife, with a 22 cm blade, it was then that the police officer fired a second shot.

The attacker collapsed after throwing the knife in the direction of the police, said Jean-François Ricard.

Before the attack

In this regard, it is the analysis of surveillance cameras that is interesting.

Jamel G. The national anti-terrorism prosecutor explained that the assailant had been spotted for the first time at 12:48 a.m. and then a few minutes on a scooter, near a prayer room, it is however not known if he entered this area. room.

At 2:19 p.m., he was near the police station, with a tote bag containing a

Koran

and a prayer rug.

Three minutes later, he stops in front of the building, checks his phone and puts on headphones.

Analysis of the phone indicates that he was listening just before the attack on religious chants.

Jamel G. then goes back and forth in front of the building, while keeping his eyes riveted on the entrance, said Jean-François Ricard.

The assailant

Jamel G. was Tunisian and was 36 years old. He had a residence permit issued in December valid for one year. He worked as a delivery driver. Officially he was domiciled with a couple of friends in Thiais, in the Val-de-Marne, but had been living with his father for a few years, a few kilometers from the Rambouillet police station.

The radicalization of Jamel G. "seems hardly questionable" for the anti-terrorism prosecutor.

His father explained to investigators that he had noticed a change in behavior and a more rigorous practice of Islam in recent times by his son.

During the attacks of last fall, he posted messages of support for terrorists on social networks.

The perpetrator also exhibited "certain personality disorders" and symptoms of depression.

Jamel G. had "requested a psychiatric consultation" at the Rambouillet hospital on February 19, then had a new appointment on February 23.

However "it seems that his condition did not require hospitalization or treatment," said Jean-François Ricard.

Police custody

Since this Sunday, five people have been in police custody.

First the assailant's father, arrested at his home during a search.

On the spot, investigators found broken phones and SD cards.

The father's custody has been extended.

Then the couple from Thiais where Jamel G. was officially domiciled, their police custody was also extended.

Finally two cousins of the assailant are also currently in police custody, including one arrested this Sunday morning.
