The duel between Armin Laschet and Markus Söder for the candidacy for chancellor must unfortunately be seen as a violation of the duel rules that have been recognized across the country for more than a century.

This raises the question of the validity of the result.

First of all: both are neither nobles nor officers.

Laschet was retired from the Bundeswehr, there is currently a photo of Söder in a red beret as a recruit in Transport Battalion 270. That is not enough.

Only nobles, officers and students as well as civil professions recognized as knightly are entitled to duel, i.e. satisfactory;

that politicians are one of them is always doubted.

Lieutenant Lobheimer and Baron Eggersdorf, however, are undoubtedly entitled to duel.

In Arthur Schnitzler's play “Liebelei” - premiered 125 years ago at the Burgtheater in Vienna and filmed several times - Lobheimer has an affair with Baroness Eggersdorf, and when her husband confronts him with his love letters, they naturally arrange to meet for a duel at dawn;

Duels are preferably held in clearings at dusk.

Lobheimer and Eggersdorf duel over violation of male honor;

after all, the baroness was under the care of her husband.

Such triggers between Söder and Laschet are not known, but any public scorn, a slap in the face, defamation or verbal insult is considered an insult to male honor.

Which brings us to their famous press conference in the Bundestag.

Here Laschet with his constantly rising voice, like an annoyed father of disobedient children.

There Söder with his short, concise sentences, a voice like a tree.

Seconds should hold back

Such a public exposure - let's call it by its name: contempt - by comparison could only end in Laschet's demand for a duel.

For the entire past week, her seconds have been fighting skirmishes, especially the Prime Ministers of Saxony-Anhalt (for Söder) and Hesse (for Laschet).

According to the duel comment, this is frowned upon, seconds are responsible for ordering the doctor, checking the weapons and walking the distance of the shooters, not for vanguard fights.

In "Liebelei" only a single bullet is fired by Eggersdorf, who is entitled to the first shot as the offender and who is not out for honor, but for revenge.

When and where the duel between Laschet and Söder will take place is still unknown.

In Berlin, the notorious “Blood Glade” in Grunewald is the ideal place for a duel, where the orgy scandal surrounding the court master of ceremonies was shot down by Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Now, according to the current state of knowledge, both Laschet and Söder are alive, maybe it will stay that way if they use non-lethal weapons such as swords, sabers or beer mugs.

The candidate duel at the Greens has been running since Monday morning, as the results were announced at noon.

Here, too, iron rules were blatantly violated.

You duel over a woman, not her.
