Even as a small child, Vandross was drawn to music.

He became known to a wide audience when he wrote the song "Fascination" with David Bowie.

He performed as a back-up singer for artists like Diana Ross and Cat Stevens before starting his solo career in 1981.

With his debut album "Never too much" he stormed the R&B charts.

The successful musician suffered a stroke in April 2003 from which he did not recover.

Vandross was one of the most popular soul singers in the United States.

In 2005 he fell asleep peacefully with his family and friends. ”Vandross had not appeared in public since his stroke.

The singer continued to go into the studio to record records.

His last album, "Dance With My Father," which he wrote with Richard Marx, sold nearly a million copies in a month when it was released in June 2003.
