If a director of a school says that all students have a day off on Monday, the girls are guaranteed not to come to school on Monday either. If the generic masculine really often led to misunderstandings, then the language community itself would have found a means to remedy this. The double forms have been around for centuries, but we only use them in spontaneous language if we consider it necessary, where it makes sense in terms of communication. It is only recently that one thinks that for ideological reasons we have to systematically double everything.
