Despite the passage of 45 years since its design, the Shah Faisal Mosque in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, is still one of the most important contemporary edifices with a modernist design built so far, and it still occupies its place on the list of the most iconic mosques in the world, and one of the largest in Asia .

The completion of the construction of the “Shah Faisal” or “King Faisal” mosque may have taken about a decade, but the final result is definitely worth the wait, with a design that blends Islamic elements from the medieval period with major contemporary features far removed from the usual classic mosques. It was based on another shape that was derived from the desert culture, which is the shape of the tent.

The idea of completing the mosque began, after the proposal of the late Saudi King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, after his visit to Pakistan in 1966, to establish an iconic mosque in the city as a gift from him, and after launching a competition to choose the appropriate design, the design of the Turkish engineer was chosen and invited Dalokai, who was able to do so. The design is to present one of the most beautiful mosques in the world, which is one of the most important landmarks of the country, and one of the most important things that must be visited there.

Work began on building the mosque in 1976, at a cost of 120 million dollars, with a design completely opposite to the usual idea of domes, but with roofs sloping down inspired by the shape of the Arab tent, and with four uniquely designed beacons, it seemed closer to a mixture between the shape of the Pharaonic obelisk and the missile, and with A complete lack of a dome.

On the outskirts of the "Marjela" hills in the Pakistani capital, which give the building a stunning panoramic background, the mosque was established at a height of 90 meters from the surface of the ground, to be visible from various directions of the city, specifically white marble, to have a prominent and clear effect on the colors of the surrounding environment.

The building and its main prayer hall are distinguished from an eight-fronted building decorated in marble, with a square base of 61 meters for each side, while the roofs of the four tent, each consisting of three triangles, meet one of them towards the qibla, all of them converging in a central main point rising from the floor of the prayer hall 40 Meters.

For many years, the International Islamic University has taken over the main courtyard of the mosque as its headquarters, but its headquarters has changed since 2000, as the university was established in 1980 with the support of a number of Islamic countries' governments, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, the Maldives, Pakistan, and others. The university teaches not only Islamic sciences, but also other social and scientific sciences.

• $ 120 million, the cost of the project.

• 5000 square meters area of the mosque.

• 90 meters the height of the four lighthouses.

• 300 thousand worshipers, the capacity of the mosque.

• The mosque and the road leading to it bore the name of the late Saudi King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, in honor of his efforts and material support to complete the project.

• One of the funny stories that visitors and tourists enjoy is that the four minarets have been examined by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), to make sure that they are not real missiles.

• The first prayer performed in it was the Eid al-Adha prayer on the day it opened in 1987.
