An Italian teacher forced a student studying from a distance to blindfold her during an exam to prevent her from cheating, which sparked outrage among the educational body, according to what Italian newspapers reported today.

The teacher, who hails from Verona in northeastern Italy, was questioned by the unusually good school results of this 15-year-old student, who published several local newspapers, blindfolded her with a black scarf in front of a computer screen.

The girl expressed her feeling of "humiliation" in front of her friends, who decided to communicate their objection through social networks and to refer to the authorities in the case.

The Department of School Affairs in the Veneto region opened an investigation into the incident, which sparked many comments from political parties.

The Deputy Minister of Education in Mario Draghi's government, Barbara Floridia, commented, "The culture of doubt is not part of the school's goals: the step taken by the teacher seems to me excessive and inappropriate. I express solidarity with the student."

The Students' Union asked the government to implement the bill of rights for students who receive their lessons from afar, which was drafted by the union.

Other students in the same school assert that they had to undergo exams while permanently sticking to the screen, preventing them from reading the lessons.

Italian students are among the worst affected among their peers in European schools due to the school closures since the start of the pandemic.

Italy closed schools 30 weeks in a year, partially or completely.
