The British Princes William and Harry paid tribute to their grandfather Prince Philip after his death with emotional statements.

Harry described Queen Elizabeth II's late husband on Monday as a "man of service, honor and good humor."

Harry had returned to the UK for his grandfather's funeral for the first time since moving to the US over the weekend.

"Grandfather, thank you for your service, your dedication to Grandma and for always being yourself," said the statement on behalf of the Duke of Sussex, his wife Meghan, his son Archie and the unborn daughter.

His grandfather was "grill master, joke legend and naughty to the end," added Harry.

His older brother William said that Philip's life was "one of service - for his country and the Commonwealth, for his wife and queen, and for our family."

"I'm going to miss my grandfather, but I know he would have wanted us to keep working," he added.

Prince Harry is currently in corona quarantine after arriving in Great Britain, his heavily pregnant wife Meghan has stayed in California.

The couple had surprisingly withdrawn from the front row of the royals in early 2020 and now live with son Archie in Meghan's Californian homeland.

Meghan's doctors had advised the Duchess against the ten-hour flight from the United States, according to a spokesman for the palace.

First reunion of Harry and William

The funeral service on Saturday will be the first meeting of the two brothers after an explosive interview by Harry and his wife with US talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

The relationship between the brothers had cooled down after the interview in which Harry and Meghan had raised allegations of racism against the royal family, among other things.

Several sporting events scheduled for Saturday afternoon have been postponed due to Philips' memorial service.

The funeral is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. (CET), then a nationwide minute's silence is planned.

“As a sign of respect”, the Premier League postponed the Wolverhampton Wanderers' soccer game against Sheffield United to a later date.

Rugby, cricket and riding tournaments have also been postponed or are to be interrupted.

After "Oprah" - William and Harry first met

Harry and Meghan had withdrawn from the inner circle of the royal family a little over a year ago and moved their center of life to California with their son Archie.

Meanwhile, there is speculation in the British media whether the mourning for Philip will stir up the conflict between Harry and his brother William.

According to British media reports, William was said to have been outraged and injured by the Sussexes' TV interview on the US show by Oprah Winfrey.

In it, the couple accused the British royal family of, among other things, racism, but also a lack of consideration - Meghan has partly African American roots.

The funeral service for Prince Philip takes place in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

It is broadcast live on television - in Germany by RTL.

The service is to begin at 4 p.m. (CEST) with a nationwide minute of silence.
