In some areas, for example in Skåne, Postnord has already started distributing the mail every other day.

This means that people who receive their morning newspaper by post only receive it every other day.

This affects several newspapers and is one of the reasons why the government is now proposing a new media subsidy of SEK 100 million.

- If the post is only distributed every other day, it will be a deterioration, democratically and news-wise for them, says Minister of Culture and Democracy Amanda Lind (MP).

Money retroactively

The authority for press, radio and television has produced a proposal on how the support, which will now go out for consultation, should be designed.

The money will be paid out retroactively for the newspapers concerned.

Of the 100 million in the proposed increase in media support, which will be presented in the spring amendment budget on Thursday, it is estimated that approximately SEK 40 million will go to this.

The remaining SEK 60 million goes to the editorial support.

Here, the government reintroduces the reliefs that applied last year in, among other things, the requirements for a certain proportion of editorial content and publication frequency.

Interesting suggestions

Simultaneously with the Government's announcement, Tidningsarbetsutgivarna (TU) proposes that the entire current press support be redone.

According to TU, the operating support has survived on its own and should be replaced by a more modern system where the media are given indirect rather than direct support.

Minister of Culture Amanda Lind thinks that the proposals are interesting.

- They have many important points in their article.

It is very much in their analysis that the operational support in its current form is about to play its role.

- The media support is one of the points in the January agreement, and we have done a lot in recent years to create a more appropriate press and media support.

I think that TU's proposals are interesting and very well worth discussing further, says Amanda Lind (MP).
