On March 10, 2021, the Ocean Viking left the port of Marseille for its 11th mission.

This boat from the NGO SOS Méditerranée rescues boats in distress as they attempt to cross illegally from Libya to Europe.

In 2020, at least 1,277 people, or more than three a day, died or went missing in the Mediterranean Sea.

According to the International Organization for Migration, it is on this route, and specifically in the central Mediterranean, that the most migrants have died or disappeared while trying to reach a new country.

Publicity

"A shameful tragedy", according to the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, who blames it on the European states who have withdrawn their boats from the area and, she said, hindered the action of NGOs. search and rescue.

Currently, four organizations are trying to maintain operations in the central Mediterranean.

RFI was able to support SOS Méditerranée on this last mission.
