  • The epidemic has accelerated sharply in recent days in Occitania.

  • In Toulouse, the Toulouse University Hospital had a complicated weekend with about fifty more hospitalizations in a very few days.

  • Its teams expect to live through 15 difficult days and hope that the effects of the measures put in place will be felt soon, as is the case in the first 19 “confined” departments from the end of March.

After stagnating for a long time, hospitalizations of patients with Covid-19 have skyrocketed in recent days in Toulouse and more generally in Occitanie.

Thus, throughout the regional territory, "the peak of hospitalizations experienced during the first wave will be exceeded," said the Regional Health Agency on Tuesday evening in its latest epidemiological bulletin.

In total, 1,857 people were treated for coronavirus in public and private establishments in Occitania, including 393 in intensive care, or 60 more over the last four days.

And it is in the Haute-Garonne department that the situation is most sensitive.

At the start of the week, 416 people were in the Covid-19 units of healthcare establishments.

At Toulouse University Hospital, this sudden deterioration of the situation was felt in less than a week.

40% more hospitalizations in less than a week

On Wednesday March 31, there were 132 patients affected by the coronavirus hospitalized in dedicated services, including 40 in intensive care.

“This Wednesday, we have 190 hospitalized patients, including about sixty either in intensive care or intensive care.

During the weekend, the situation was tense with an influx of patients, more than fifty more in a few days ”, notes Professor Pierre Delobel, head of the infectious and tropical diseases department at the CHU.

To cope with "this clear acceleration", additional beds have been opened.

A situation that practitioners expected given the increase in incidence rates, which is now 290.3 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants in Haute-Garonne and rises to 322 cases for the Toulouse metropolitan area.

“The next fortnight will be difficult.

The measures taken could then have an effect, this is what is observed in the 19 departments where these measures were anticipated 10 to 15 days ago and where there is a slight decline, ”continues the doctor.

It is also counting on the acceleration of vaccination which has already produced its effects on the age group of older patients, less present in intensive care units.

While the average age has dropped slightly, the patient profile remains roughly the same.

People hospitalized at a younger age in Toulouse often have co-morbidities.
