Lost tapes of the 27 club is the name of the project which consists of four works inspired by Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison.

The initiative is based on an AI program that has analyzed up to 30 songs by each artist, which has then been composed by a human sound engineer for new songs.

For example, Nirvana's "new" song contains everything from the quiet guitar pick in Come as you are to the more furious guitar playing in the song Scoff.

As for the lyrics, they have been treated by the same AI technology, where for example Kurt Cobain's most common word choice and sentences have been put together.

The songs are then recorded by artists who work on a daily basis to play cover songs by the artists.

The goal is to shed light on mental illness

Despite the intention to sound as similar to the original as possible, the initiators believe that in the end it is a work done by computers, and that the main purpose is to shed light on mental illness.

All four artists are part of the so-called 27-club, where people who died when they were 27 years old are included.

- What would have happened if all the musicians we love had received support for mental illness ?, says Sean O'Connor, who among other things sits on the board of Over the Bridge.

He believes that depression in the music industry is often romanticized and that it is seen as a sign of authenticity when an artist sings about his own suffering.

The songs can be listened to here.
