Madame Claude
, film by Sylvie Verheyde, retracing the incredible story of the most famous pimp in
France
, is broadcast on Netflix, for want of being able to be released in theaters.
Born Fernande Grudet in 1923 in Angers, and died “Madame Claude” in 2015 in Nice, this woman who fascinated her time by inventing a life of great bourgeois and deported resistance was at the head of a major prostitution network who counted among his clients the greats of this world, including Marlon Brando, John F. Kennedy and the Shah of Iran.
The "
madam of the Republic
"
In her work, she tells her story in a voice-over and describes herself, in the film, as a “
pimp of the Republic
”.
The "
real
" Madame Claude hated this nickname, however, but she reigned in the middle of the 60s and 70s, providing luxury prostitutes to politicians, industrialists and the big bourgeois of the time.
By choosing a male pseudonym, this pimp wants to compete with the godfathers of the time, Joe Attia or François Marcantoni, who can be seen in the background.
Director
Sylvie Verheyde
paints the portrait of an ambiguous character, symbol of sexual and social emancipation, but also psychopath exploiting, without qualms, some 200 young women.
It is Karole Rocher, lover of roles of "
wicked
" and broken mouths, who plays the pimp who died in 2015 after being twice convicted, restoring her power and her flaws: emotional misery, connivance with organized crime, absence of scruples.
This
biopic
flirts with the spy movie.
Worn by the masterful Karole Rocher,
Madame Claude
shows without voyeurism or complacency the grandeur and decadence of a female gangster.
Released on Netflix
It is the second French film to land on Netflix after
Bronx
.
To lower the pressure caused by
the closing of theaters a little
, the authorities have exceptionally allowed, since Thursday, films to be released initially on a small screen or on a platform, while retaining the aid received during their production.
“It would be detrimental both for the public and for our creators if, because of a too large number of films available, large productions, especially American ones, deprive more diversified works of exposure. It is essential that each work can meet its audience,
”explained the president of the National Center for Cinematography (CNC), Dominique Boutonnat, by presenting this temporary departure from the sacrosanct chronology of the media.
