One day after the start of the allocation of vaccination appointments for the age group 60 plus with the vaccine from AstraZeneca in North Rhine-Westphalia, most of the appointments are already taken.

Many districts or cities such as Cologne, Bielefeld or Recklinghausen are fully booked, reported the North Rhine and Westphalia-Lippe associations of statutory health insurance physicians on Sunday.

Only around 25,000 vaccination appointments are still free in the North Rhine area.

In Westphalia-Lippe, 90 percent or around 151,600 of the appointments to be allocated are already booked, reported the Düsseldorf Ministry of Health.

According to this, there are major regional differences in the area of the Westphalia-Lippe Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians.

While everything is fully booked in the cities of Bielefeld, Hagen, Hamm and Münster or in the districts of Coesfeld, Gütersloh, Lippe, Recklinghausen, Steinfurt or Warendorf, there are still vacancies elsewhere.

In Olpe, for example, half the appointments are still available.

In Lüdenscheid 40 percent, in Herford 38 percent and in Siegen 35 percent of the existing appointments are still free.

The group aged 60 and over has a chance to vaccinate out of the usual sequence after the Standing Vaccination Commission recommended that the AstraZeneca vaccine no longer be used for younger people.

The background is cases of blood clots (thromboses) in cerebral veins.

In this way 450,000 vaccine doses were released in the short term in North Rhine-Westphalia alone.
