The Italian Government wants to expel the large ships from the Venice lagoon to
protect the cultural and environmental heritage
of the city of the canals, and for this reason it has established today that a contest will be called in the next two months to gather ideas that give with a definitive solution.
This has been established by the Council of Ministers in a decree-law that "aims to structurally solve the
problem of the transit of large ships in Venice,
providing docking points outside the lagoon", government sources have explained.
"In order to reconcile the needs to protect the artistic, cultural and environmental heritage of Venice and its lagoon with cruise activity and freight traffic, the decree establishes that the Port Authority of the North Adriatic Sea launches an ideas competition ", have added.

The tender will serve to debate projects that result in the construction of mooring points
for ships of more than 40,000 tons
and dedicated to the transport of passengers, as well as for container
ships
used for transoceanic transport.
The Minister of Culture,
Dario Franceschini,
has celebrated the decision on social networks and has said that "it has been expected for years."
"The Council of Ministers approves a decree that establishes that the definitive landing of the great ships in Venice must be designed and built outside the lagoon, as requested by UNESCO," he wrote.
In 2012 UNESCO asked the Italian Government to look for
alternatives to maritime traffic
in the area of the Venice lagoon and to end the passage of large ships has been one of the conditions that it has subsequently imposed to prevent Venice from being removed from the list of world heritage cities to be considered a place in danger.
