The project, as expected, caused a controversial reaction from the audience: many viewers criticized the acting, costumes and sets, as well as the inconsistencies between the new tape and its predecessor, a television film of the late 1960s.
In particular, critics paid attention to how Moroz interprets the characters and motivations of the characters, including the main characters.
The last episode aired on April 1.
From it it became clear that the ending of the series does not correspond to either the Soviet picture or the original source.
If in the original Prokhor, tormented by the atrocities committed by him, commits suicide, then a new tape breaks off at the time of the Tunguska catastrophe.

At the beginning of the story, he is presented as a young merchant who, due to a conflict with his father, is forced to go on a dangerous journey.
Having passed this test, the hero starts his own business.
However, in the future, Prokhor will have to make a deal with his conscience more than once and undergo a change in moral and ethical guidelines.
The roles in the film were performed by Alexander Gorbatov, Yulia Peresild, Alexander Baluev, Viktor Rakov, Sophia Ernst and other artists.
The film was directed by Yuri Moroz ("Kamenskaya", "The Brothers Karamazov").
The series became the second adaptation of the novel - the first in 1968 was released by the Soviet cinematographer Yaropolk Lapshin.
The new tape is distinguished by greater attention to the mysticism presented in the novel, as well as a more complete depiction of the events of the second part, which deals with the mature years of Prokhor Gromov.
According to Yuri Moroz, the 2021 series is not a direct adaptation of the novel.
New storylines have appeared in the script.
The filmmakers paid more attention to the lyrical component and less to the topic of the class struggle.
