In a park in Brussels, police officers fought violent arguments with thousands of people who, despite the ban, had come to a party that was declared an April Fool's joke.

When representatives of the mounted police and anti-riot units arrived in the park on the southern outskirts, they were greeted with projectiles from the crowd, according to AFP reporters.

The police used water cannons and arrested several participants.

The public prosecutor's office in the Belgian capital had previously pointed out that the celebration, which had been called for in the online networks, was prohibited due to the corona requirements.

She warned of criminal prosecution because of the risk of infection associated with disregarding the ban.

Nevertheless, several thousand people gathered in the Bois de la Cambre on Thursday afternoon.

Groups of young people dancing could be seen on TV pictures.

According to media reports, several of the celebrants and at least one police officer were injured during the operation.
