Regarding domestic candidate sites aiming to be registered as a World Cultural Heritage, the Agency for Cultural Affairs council decided to use the conventional method based on open recruitment to local governments when reviewing the "provisional list" that is the premise of recommendation to UNESCO. Once again, we have put together a report that the council should consider from the beginning.

The Council for Cultural Affairs' World Cultural Heritage Subcommittee compiled a report on future policies for registration and how it should be protected and utilized after registration, and submitted it to the Deputy Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Takahashi on the 30th.

Candidate sites for World Heritage sites recommended to UNESCO are selected from the "provisional list", and many heritage sites to be added to the list have been publicly recruited to local governments in 2006 and 2007. If so, it is selected from the suggestions received at this time.

Regarding this, the report will be reviewed for the enhancement of the list in the future because academic examination and examination are the main premise and the recommendation of heritage that transcends the boundaries of local governments is expected in the future. In some cases, the Council for Cultural Affairs, which is made up of experts, should consider adding projects from the beginning, rather than based on open recruitment to local governments.

He also pointed out that if the activity for recommendation has not been carried out for a certain period of time after being listed on the "provisional list", it should be considered to remove it from the list after confirming the intentions of the relevant local governments. ..

The "provisional list" currently lists six cultural heritage sites, of which the "Hokkaido / Northeastern Jomon Archaeological Sites" has already been recommended with the aim of registering this year.

The Council for Cultural Affairs hopes to sustainably preserve and utilize the World Cultural Heritage by making additions and changes to the subsequent list based on this report.

What is a "provisional list"?

As for Japan's world cultural heritage, "Buddhist monuments in the Horyuji area" and "Himeji Castle" were registered for the first time in 1993, and 19 cases including the adult "Hyakutobori / Furuichi Kofungun" are registered.

The "provisional list" is a list of candidate sites that are a prerequisite for recommendation to UNESCO, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs conducted open recruitment to local governments nationwide in 2006 and 2007 in order to increase the number of targets.

As a result, there were 24 proposals in 2006 and 32 proposals including re-proposals in 2007, and 9 of them were listed in the "provisional list".

Of these, six such as "Mt. Fuji" and "Tomioka Silk Mill and Silk Industry Heritage Group" have already been registered as World Cultural Heritage, and "Hokkaido / Northeastern Jomon Archaeological Sites" is aiming to be registered this year.
