The bar of 5,000 patients in "intensive care", or "in critical care", according to the new terminology, due to the coronavirus epidemic, was exceeded on Tuesday, Public Health France announced in its daily bulletin.

The health agency reported 5,072 patients in this case, 98 more than the day before.

The pace of admissions never seen before

On Monday, the peak of the second wave of the epidemic, just over 4,900 patients in mid-November, had been exceeded.

The peak of the first wave, with just over 7,000 patients at the start of April, is still a long way off.

But the rate of critical care admissions is very high: 569 in 24 hours, unheard of since April 2020. The total number of hospitalized patients also increases, to 28,510 against 28,322 on Monday.

The peak in this matter was reached in mid-November, when we approached 33,500 patients.

These figures, which are climbing despite the current vaccination campaign and tightened restrictions in the most affected departments, are fueling speculation on the eve of a new health defense council on Wednesday.

"If necessary, we would take other measures to always protect the French," said the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran, at the National Assembly in the afternoon.
