A new estimate has been made that a huge Nankai Trough earthquake will generate 12 times more disaster waste than the Great East Japan Earthquake.

As with the Great East Japan Earthquake, it is necessary to secure a maximum of more than 200 vessels to complete the treatment in three years, and the Ministry of the Environment is considering the treatment period and waste transportation method.

This trial calculation was compiled by a working team of experts set up by the Ministry of the Environment.

According to this, it is estimated that the amount of disaster waste generated by the Nankai Trough giant earthquake and tsunami is 247 million tons nationwide, which is about 12 times that of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

By region, Shikoku has the largest amount at about 71.6 million tons, Chubu has about 62.9 million tons, and Kinki has about 44.3 million tons.

In the Great East Japan Earthquake, it took almost three years to complete the treatment of disaster waste, but according to this estimation, if the Nankai Trough giant earthquake is treated over a wide area nationwide, the treatment can be completed in three years. ..

However, assuming that all waste to be treated over a wide area will be transported by ship, it is necessary to secure a maximum of 236 ships, so the work team pointed out the need to consider transportation methods including land. doing.

The Ministry of the Environment will proceed with consideration of appropriate treatment periods and waste transportation methods based on the results of trial calculations and indications.
