It only took a few minutes for the table to greatly exceed its estimate of between 5 and 8 million euros.

One of the rare Van Gogh paintings still belonging to private individuals sold in about ten minutes to reach 13 million euros.

The sale organized by Sotheby's Paris was carried out directly with bidders in London, New York and Hong Kong as well as with anonymous people on the internet.

And it was ultimately a bidder on the web who won.

The painting dated 1887 shows a street scene in Montmartre where we see the Moulin à Poivre, one of the Moulins de la Galette, behind palisades, against a background of a blue-gray winter sky.

In the foreground, a couple are walking and two children are playing.

The painting listed in the catalogs (with black and white photos) had never appeared since it was acquired by a French family around 1920.
