After the cancellation of the Easter lockdown, Lower Saxony is examining tougher corona restrictions over the holidays.

"We will not just be able to let things go," said Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD).

The next steps will now be discussed within the state government.

In addition to restricting day trips, the possibilities could also include exit restrictions, which are named in the federal-state resolution for high-incidence regions.

16 of the 45 districts and large cities in Lower Saxony are already regions with a seven-day incidence of over 200, the national average the seven-day incidence rose to 100 on Wednesday.

"Any mobility that is not absolutely necessary and any direct encounters with people outside of one's own household that are not absolutely necessary must be avoided," said Weil.

"In Lower Saxony we have to shut down public life as much as possible in the next two weeks, voluntarily and, please, beyond the measures ordered by the state."

Getting the infection situation under control is a prerequisite for model tests planned after Easter with openings in retail in combination with rapid tests, emphasized Weil.

The increasing numbers of new infections are putting a limit to the model tests, said government spokeswoman Anke Pörksen.

Interested municipalities have not yet been able to register for the model test, the modalities are to be regulated in the state's new Corona regulation.
