Reappearance of the Tombs of the Rong People in the Spring and Autumn Period in Henan

Xinhua News Agency, Zhengzhou, March 24 (Reporter Li Lijing) The reporter learned from the Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology in Sanmenxia City, Henan Province that archaeologists have unearthed 42 tombs of the Rong in the Lusi West Site in Mianchi County.

This is the discovery of the Rong people's cemetery in the Central Plains after the much-watched Lu Hunrong royal tomb was discovered last year at the Xuyang Cemetery in Luoyang, Henan.

The site is located in Lusi Village, Tianchi Town, Mianchi County, Sanmenxia City, Henan Province.

From July to December 2020, the Sanmenxia Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the Henan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology jointly conducted archaeological excavations. A total of 123 tombs were cleared, including 42 tombs in the Spring and Autumn Period, 57 tombs in the Western Zhou Period, and 197 ash pits. One; one in Lingyin during Erlitou period.

430 sets of unearthed artifacts are mainly pottery, and there are also bones, bones, lead, stone, and bronze.

According to Zheng Lichao, director of the Sanmenxia Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, the tombs of the Spring and Autumn Period excavated this time are all rectangular vertical cave earth pit tombs, and the direction of the tombs is mostly north-south.

Burial pottery is mostly placed between coffins or in niches. The combination of pottery is relatively fixed. It is a combination of one-ear pots, basins, and pots, and pig bones or sheep bones are found in the single-ear pots.

"Because the combination of artifacts and the shape of the tombs are basically the same as the small and medium-sized tombs in the Xuyang Rong people cemetery in Luoyang, we judge that this is another Rong people cemetery discovered in the Central Plains. This once again confirms the historical facts of the Rong people's internal migration during the Spring and Autumn Period, and provides New materials for the distribution of the Rong people and the cultural connotation of the Rong people.” Zheng Lichao said.

According to another report, the 57 Western Zhou tombs discovered this time are neatly arranged and have a uniform burial customs. They are all rectangular vertical cave earth pit tombs. The direction of the tombs is mostly east-west.

According to the characteristics of the funeral customs, archaeologists infer that these tombs should be the tombs of Yin survivors in the Western Zhou Dynasty.

It is reported that this is the first tomb of Yin survivors in the Sanmenxia area, and it is also a rare large-scale cemetery for Yin survivors in recent years.
