The privileges and abuses of the Spanish monarchy increasingly irritate the population, which learns in a trickle of business troubles tainting the royal family.

King Emeritus Juan Carlos recently announced that he was getting into good standing with the tax authorities by paying 4 million euros in taxes, a sum due to undeclared income.

In golden exile in Abu Dhabi, Juan Carlos is the target of three major judicial inquiries, including one linked to an opaque commission of 100 million euros that he would have received from Saudi Arabia in 2015 during the construction of the Spanish TGV in La Mecca.

Another for using credit cards linked to bank accounts that are not in his name and a third whose motives have not been revealed by the anti-corruption prosecution.

The presence in the government of the Podemos party, favorable to a referendum on the maintenance of the monarchy, further weakens a crown with tarnished reflections.
