Despite major corona restrictions and one of the highest vaccination rates in the world, more new infections have been counted in Chile than ever before.
The Ministry of Health reported 7,084 new cases within 24 hours on Saturday.
That was more than the previous daily high in June.
The government also announced that the Covid-19 disease caused by the coronavirus is now the number one cause of death in Chile.
26 percent of the deaths this year are due to it.
More than 29 percent of the around 18 million Chileans have already received a first corona vaccination, 15 percent both.
This puts the country far ahead of others in the region and also ahead of European countries.
Health Minister Enrique Paris called on the Chileans to continue to adhere to the corona restrictions.
Strict conditions apply to three quarters of the districts in Chile.
New entry restrictions on the border with Brazil were also announced on Saturday.
According to official information, 94 percent of the hospital beds in Chile are used.
Increasingly, this includes people under the age of 60.
Most of the older ones are already vaccinated.
