  • The Minister of the Interior has asked fashion schools and vocational high schools with a "Fashion professions" sector to reflect on "changes in the behavior of police officers".

  • Gérald Darmanin wants agents to be able to wear this new uniform, which will replace the one created by the Balenciaga house in 2004, during the parade on July 14.

  • Students criticized this initiative on social networks.

The police will be given a new uniform.

As revealed by Mediapart, Gérald Darmanin wrote, on March 12, to 24 fashion schools and professional high schools with a “Fashion professions” sector to ask them to reflect on “changes in the behavior of police officers” .

An initiative that goes quite badly with the students of the institutions concerned.

They made it known, in particular on social networks, after the letter sent by the minister to the director of the Superior School of Applied Arts Duperré was made public by Documentations, a participatory media dedicated to art.

The current uniforms were created in 2004 by the Balenciaga house, recalls the first cop in France.

It is a “predominantly navy blue set consisting of a cap, a jacket with removable lining, straight-cut pants and an ice blue polo shirt”.

But the Minister of the Interior, anxious to "meet the expectations of the police", wishes to "revisit" the outfit and give it "a more modern appearance, more in line with the needs on the ground and the realities of society".

End of April

Gérald Darmanin suggests that the students of these establishments “work on this development”.

For this, he communicated to them "the main guidelines of a specification".

Gone are the "soft cap" which is "overwhelmingly rejected" by the workforce who would rather like "a" modernized "police cap".

"This new headdress will have to adapt to all the morphologies of heads, hairstyles and hair for men as well as women".

Important clarification: “Rank badges must be able to be attached to them by a pin-type system.

The polo shirt, “is not in question”.

But its "too light" blue is no longer to the taste of the workforce.

"The resistance of the screen printing markings is unsatisfactory", he adds, specifying that "the field would like embroidery".

To stimulate their imagination, Gérald Darmanin also added to his letter “an example of what can be presented”.

No time to waste !

The minister awaits the students' proposals before the end of April.

According to

Le Canard Enchaîné

, which had heard of this project, he would like the agents to be able to parade in their new uniform on July 14.

"Free student labor"

"Proposing this project to our school is clearly a huge joke", reacts on Instagram one of the students of this establishment located "close to the Place de la République", where "hundreds and hundreds" of CRS attacked "demonstrators" or "refugees".

This young person also says he is shocked by the method used by the ministry, which consists in "using young talents free of charge, without remuneration".

"It is part of a context where companies come to art schools making us believe that we are participating in" workshops ", when they just come to exploit free student labor", adds another student.

Contacted by

20 Minutes

, neither the ministry nor the Duperré school wished to react.

But the director of the establishment, Alain Soreil, informed Mediapart that the Duperré school receives “lots of requests, it is the students who choose whether they want to respond or not”.
