The EU Commission has agreed with the vaccine supplier Biontech / Pfizer an early delivery of ten million doses in the second quarter.

This increases the total number of cans promised by the manufacturer for the period from April to June to over 200 million, said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (CDU) on Tuesday.

This gives the member states "leeway" and can fill "gaps in deliveries" from other manufacturers.

According to Von der Leyen, the early deliveries come from an option for the third and fourth quarters.

The agreement must therefore still be approved by the member states.

The British-Swedish manufacturer AstraZeneca has been causing major problems for the EU for months.

This had to cut its promised delivery quantities for the first quarter drastically due to production problems.

In the meantime, many Member States have also suspended vaccinations with the product because of reports of severe blood clots.

The World Health Organization will advise on the cases on Tuesday.

On Thursday, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) wants to deal with the next steps in a special meeting.
