The Compensation Commission for Victims of Crimes (Civi) of the Paris Judicial Court allocated 30,000 euros in provisional compensation on March 11 to Jérôme Rodrigues, "yellow vest" knocked out during a demonstration on January 26, 2019, according to a decision consulted Tuesday by AFP.

In this case, a police officer was indicted on January 14 by the examining magistrates charged since February 2019 to establish the responsibilities in the mutilation of Jérôme Rodrigues, place de la Bastille during act 11 of the "yellow vests ".

30,000 euros "on a provisional basis in view of the seriousness of his injuries"

After a long work of investigation, based on video cross-references and testimonies, the police officer suspected of having thrown the de-encircling grenade, a fragment of which struck the eye of Jérôme Rodrigues, was indicted for "willful violence resulting in dismemberment or permanent disability ”, aggravated by several circumstances.

A criminal qualification falling under the assizes.

On March 11, the Civi estimated that it was now possible to allocate 30,000 euros to Jérôme Rodrigues "on a provisional basis in view of the seriousness of his injuries", against the opinion of the public prosecutor who had asked to wait for the end of the judicial investigation before ruling on this request.

According to the Civi, "it has been established that Jérôme Rodrigues was injured by a grenade fire (...) which has the material character of an offense of violence, while self-defense cannot be opposed" to Jérôme Rodrigues, no more than an act which would have been legitimately carried out in the exercise of the maintenance of order, “nor even a fault” which it would have committed.

The beginnings of a "justice specialized in police violence"?

The experts in particular made “the observation of absence of violent or hostile behavior of (Mr. Rodrigues) or of the people who were near him, while the police officers were the target of demonstrators being in a place very different from the Place de la Bastille ”, according to this decision.

To fix the amount of the final compensation, the Civi ordered an expertise which must be delivered in September.

For the moment, an expert opinion ordered within the framework of the judicial information evaluated the damage of the “yellow vest” to “a permanent functional deficit of 25%”.

"A justice specializing in police violence is beginning to emerge, including compensation for victims whose lives are destroyed by the police apparatus" welcomed the lawyer of Jérôme Rodrigues, Me Arié Alimi.
