A wild giant panda in Baoxing died of suspected illness

On March 14, staff of the Forestry Bureau of Baoxing County, Sichuan Province confirmed to the media that a wild panda that was suspected of being ill died after rescue.

On February 20, the giant panda was sent back to the county for treatment after being found in the wild.

On March 15, the reporter learned from the Propaganda Department of the Baoxing County Party Committee that because the county's Forestry Bureau did not have a rescue center, the giant panda was found the next day and sent it to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding for treatment.

They are also waiting for test results to determine the specific cause of death.

An industry insider who has been engaged in wildlife-related work for more than 20 years said that the news that the giant panda is only more than 10 years old is a bit surprising. Wild giant pandas can live to around 20 years old, and their 10s are in their prime of life.

The turn of winter and spring is a time period when wild animal deaths are more concentrated, but the natural elimination is mainly the old, weak, sick and disabled wild animals.

Sent to Chengdu Panda Base for treatment and is currently waiting for test results

According to previous media reports, on February 20, a wild panda in Baoxing County, Ya'an stayed in a forest for several hours and remained motionless.

After observation, the giant panda has no external injuries, but has a runny nose and is not in good spirits. It is preliminarily judged to be ill.

After receiving the news, staff from the local forestry public security and forestry departments rushed to the scene, packed the giant pandas into cages and transported them back to Baoxing County, where the local forestry department would treat the giant pandas.

On the 14th, the staff of Baoxing County Forestry Bureau confirmed to the media that the wild panda died after being rescued.

According to his introduction, the giant panda was sent back to the county for treatment after being found in the wild.

The giant panda is more than 10 years old, and the specific cause of death is still unclear. "The test report has not yet been obtained." However, judging from the findings of pleural effusion in the giant panda's chest at that time, it is preliminarily inferred that it died of illness.

On the 15th, the reporter learned from the Propaganda Department of the Baoxing County Party Committee that the county forestry bureau did not have a treatment center due to insufficient treatment conditions in the county. The panda was found and sent to the Chengdu Panda Base for treatment the next day.

Currently they are also waiting for the test results.

Regarding some speculations on the Internet, the other party said that there is no basis for judgment without a test report. I hope everyone can wait patiently and the test results shall prevail.

Tens are in prime of life

Pleural effusion or inflammation caused by

Regarding the news that the wild panda died after being rescued ineffective, an industry insider who has been engaged in wildlife-related work for more than 20 years said that in terms of time, it is more difficult for wild animals to find food in winter. Animals are all a hurdle, so the turn of winter and spring is a time period when wildlife death is more concentrated.

Many old, weak, sick and disabled wild animals will be eliminated naturally.

During this period of time, when he was investigating in the field, he also saw the carcasses of many animals by the river, including takins and siberian sheep.

"According to current news reports, the panda is most likely to be ill." The industry insider said that the panda is more than 10 years old and is in its prime of life, with few natural enemies in the wild.

In terms of large mammals, in addition to giant pandas, there are some bears and snow leopards in Baoxing County, which pose a certain threat to adult giant pandas.

But the fight between the two sides is really difficult to distinguish between the winners and losers, so people rarely hear the news of adult pandas being attacked by other animals.

At the same time, the giant panda had no trauma when it was found, indicating that it had not experienced a fight.

According to the industry insider, as far as he knows, various parasitic diseases are one of the diseases that wild pandas are susceptible to. Typical examples include roundworms in the body and scale mites on the body.

Among them, roundworms are familiar to everyone, but animals cannot take medicine like humans.

Regarding the pleural effusion mentioned in the news, he said that the effusion indicates inflammation, and the pleural cavity contains the heart, lungs and pleura, some of which may be diseased.

Of course, the final cause of death still needs to wait for the test report.

Previously found injured panda

Suspected of being attacked by other beasts

The reporter noticed that due to the large number of wild giant pandas in the territory, Baoxing County is not the first time that a giant panda that is sick and injured in need of rescue has been found.

According to a media report on May 6, 2016: A villager in Baoxing, Ya'an, was picking wild vegetables and found a wild panda with obvious injuries to its ears, back, right hind leg, and tail.

The staff rescued him down the mountain. The injured panda was a male, 4 years old and weighing 44 kg. He was then sent to the Ya'an Base of the China Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center for treatment.

After consulting with the surgical experts of Ya'an People's Hospital and trying all possible rescue methods, the giant panda died at 14:50 that day because of his injuries and the rescue was ineffective.

According to expert analysis, this giant panda may have been injured because of an attack by another beast.
