Ireland has also suspended vaccinations with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Similar measures had recently taken place in Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Austria.

Ireland's Minister of Health Stephen Donnelly justified the temporary suspension with new information from Norway.

"This is a precaution," he said on Twitter.

Around every fifth vaccination on the island has so far been carried out with AstraZeneca, primarily for employees in the health system.

The country's vaccination commission had previously recommended the suspension.

Following the death of a vaccinated teacher, the Piedmont region in Italy also suspended vaccination with AstraZeneca.

One acts out of "extreme caution" until one finds out whether the vaccination is related to death, said the health officer of the northern Italian region, Luigi Genesio Icardi.

The teacher died in the city of Biella.

So far, no problems with the vaccine have been reported in Piedmont.

The vaccine manufacturer AstraZeneca had assured on Friday that its corona vaccine was safe.

"An analysis of our safety data of more than 10 million data records has shown no evidence of an increased risk of pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis," said a company spokesman.

This applies to all ages, genders, countries or batches of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

"In fact, these events occur less frequently among vaccinated people than in the general population," it said.
