From now on, it will no longer be necessary to count on The Weeknd to participate in the Grammy Awards, the highest body of recognition within the American music industry.

For the artist, amazement has given way to anger and bitterness.

Shunned by the competition which did not grant him any nomination, he slams the door definitively and denounces the opacity and “corruption” in the nomination process.

"You owe me transparency, as well as to my fans and to the industry," he said on Twitter when the nominations were announced last November.

Since then, the singer has told the

New York Times

of his intention to definitely turn his back on the Grammy Awards.

"I will no longer allow my label to submit my music to the Grammys ... because of the secret committees", he assured this week, a few days before the ceremony.

An underground battle

For several years now, many artists have denounced the lack of transparency in the competition, and more particularly the lack of recognition towards black women and artists.

It had been the case of Drake, Kanye West or even Frank Ocean.

This year, The Weeknd's absence from the nominee list looks all the more like a punishment since the artist was a great success last year with his album

After Hours

and marked the spirits with his performance during the Super Bowl halftime.

Now, any reconciliation between The Weeknd and the Grammy Awards seems impossible.
