Investigations are underway against a paramedic as well as two police officers and a resident of the facility after a dispute during a deployment in a refugee accommodation in Hesse.

The 44-year-old paramedic is suspected of having hit a resident of the accommodation in Kassel once during the operation after he was said to have spat on the paramedic and his colleague, a spokesman for the Kassel public prosecutor told the German press agency on Friday.

Investigations were underway against him on suspicion of bodily harm.

For this purpose, a video from a surveillance camera was seen, said the spokesman.

In addition, it will be checked whether the officials have committed a thwarting punishment in the office.

The "Bild" newspaper had previously reported on it.

The incident occurred on November 8th last year.

According to a police report at the time, the police and ambulance service had been called to the refugee accommodation because of a resident who had rioted.

The 32-year-old “visibly drunk” resident was “apparently helpless” at first, but “regained his strength” during the operation, the police said.

The man is said to have tried to attack the emergency services with an aluminum ladder.

The officers could have fended him off "by using pepper spray quickly" and then overpowering the attacker.

The man had put up considerable resistance, there had also been "several spitting attacks against the officers and the rescue workers," it said.

Investigations are ongoing against the 32-year-old for assault and resistance to law enforcement officers as well as for attempted bodily harm and insult.

The Kassel police chief Konrad Stelzenbach then promised clarification: “I can assure you that the processes of November 8th, 2020, as they can be seen in the video sequence, make me stunned and affected.

Violence against a fixed and thus defenseless person cannot be tolerated - regardless of what happened before.

I am committed to a complete and consistent clarification of the facts.
