After signing four Marvel films, two

Captain America

and two

Avengers

, and taking the saga to the top of the box office with

Endgame

in 2019, brothers Anthony and Joe Russo had the world in front of them, if not at their feet.

They could string to whatever they wanted, literally.

But what to do, what film?

It will be

Cherry, the lost innocence

, available this Friday and around the world on the Apple TV + platform, after a short theatrical release in the United States.

They find Tom Holland, the current interpreter of Spider-Man, but beware, no costume, no power, no heroism.

The opioid crisis, a strong subject

"We were still in the

middle of Avengers: Endgame

when we were recommended Nico Walker's book, Cherry," Anthony Russo tells Premiere.

A shock.

We're originally from Cleveland, where the story takes place, - and that universe meant a lot to us.

But what motivated us to shoot the movie right after

Endgame

was the subject itself: opioid addiction.

We lost friends and relatives because of it.

Joe and I immediately felt the need to talk about it, and we felt that culturally and socially it was important to do so.

"

Cherry

follows, over several years, the fate of a young soldier who, on his return from the war in Iraq, develops post-traumatic stress and robs banks to supply himself with opioids.

Yes, that's a lot for a single man, even for a single movie.

Cherry

may be a “simple” drama, but the Russo brothers give it their all, if not overdo it, with war scenes and stylistic effects, aided by a comfortable budget.

They can also count on Tom Holland who confirms that he has everything of a great future.

the dark rooms versus or with the platforms?

The film had its place on the big screen, but as Anthony Russo recounts, still on the Première site, “we funded the film independently.

It was only sold to Apple a few months ago, during the pandemic.

Apple is a very exciting platform for filmmakers.

And in my opinion, it will last long after the pandemic ”.

If they don't imagine theaters - "and its form of fellowship" - going away, our box office masters also support streaming platforms.

“They allow the emergence of more varied and interesting projects than ever before,” comments Joe Russo.
