  Odense joined Philips in 1952 after obtaining an engineering degree.

Eight years later, he took over the company's product development department.

Within a year, he and his team developed the first portable tape recorder.

In 1963, Odense invented the cassette tape.

Odense later participated in the invention of the CD disc.
