After five weeks of confinement, a gradual lifting of restrictions will begin from March 15 in Mayotte.

The prefect of Mayotte announced on Wednesday evening the lifting of restrictions, gradually from Monday, March 15, after five weeks of confinement which made it possible to reverse the curve of the Covid-19 epidemic, in this department of France. 'Indian Ocean.

"We must get out of confinement because the Mahorais are tired, but we must not put ourselves in danger," said Prefect Jean-François Colombet at a press conference.

Containment will be lifted from Monday, March 15 at 4 a.m., but a curfew will go into effect from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Primary schools will once again welcome students with a strict health protocol.

The colleges and high schools will open by half-gauge: half of the staff will take classes on Monday, the other the following day.

Bars and restaurants remain closed

All businesses are also authorized to open, respecting a maximum number of customers.

On the other hand, bars and restaurants will remain closed for at least two weeks, depending on the evolution of the indicators. 

For all businesses and public services, teleworking continues to be encouraged.

The counters will once again welcome the public from March 22.

Just like the borders

The borders remain closed, even though flights may be authorized to repatriate French nationals who so request.

And the compelling reasons for traveling remain in place.

Finally, the 73 main mosques will once again be able to welcome the faithful one day a week, on Fridays, with a strict sanitary protocol, as will the churches, which will be able to open on Sundays.

All of these restrictions can be eased from Monday, March 22, if the epidemic continues to decline in the territory: the curfew will be postponed to 8 p.m., then 10:30 p.m. the following week, bars and restaurants will be able to reopen their terraces.

"The goal is that on April 4, a week before Ramadan, we can reopen places of worship, lift the curfew and allow festive moments again," said the prefect.

A particularly severe second wave

With a peak of 930 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the second wave of Covid-19 was particularly severe in Mayotte, which has limited hospital resources.

More than 100 patients were evacuated to Reunion Island and 73 people died during the first three months of 2021, i.e. more than for the whole of 2020 (56 deaths recorded between March 15 and December 31, 2020) .
