Five men are said to have attacked a federal police officer in Berlin with blows and kicks and seriously injured them.

The group is said to have observed the 29-year-old, who was not on duty, leaving his apartment, recognized it as a police officer and insulted him.

The police announced on Thursday.

The attackers are said to have pulled a piece of clothing over his head before injuring him on Wednesday evening.

The federal police officer yelled for help loudly, whereupon the men fled.

The man held an attacker until the police arrived.

The 41-year-old alleged thug looked drunk and was taken into custody for a blood sample.

The policeman was taken to hospital with injuries to his head, trunk and legs.

The police state security responsible for political crimes has now started the investigation.

For his protection, the police did not disclose where the policeman was ambushed.

"This sneaky targeted attack shows the risk police officers are exposed to outside of the service and that criminals do not even shy away from visiting them at home," said Lars Wendland from the GdP Federal Police Berlin-Brandenburg to the "Berliner Zeitung".
