The Ministry of Culture and Youth organized, the day before yesterday, as part of its activities for the National Reading Month, a symposium entitled “Reading is an Investment for Man and Sustaining Knowledge”, in which Ali Saeed Al Kaabi, Advisor to the President of the United Arab Emirates University, and Ali Obaid Al Hamli, Director of the News Center at Dubai Media Corporation, and the writer Dr. Hamad Al Hammadi It was managed by Aisha Sultan, the media, through the ministry’s YouTube channel.

The session dealt with the importance of celebrating reading, the role of the book as a vessel for knowledge, and reading in the sustainability of knowledge and its investment in building educated generations that make reading a regular daily behavior and a tool for communication with other societies. It also shed light on the leadership awareness of the value of reading in the UAE since the rule of the late founding father. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, through establishing major book fairs, leading to the Reading Law, the National Reading Strategy and the Reading Fund.

Ali Al Hameli began the conversation by praising the fruitful reading activities in its month, and the role of the Ministry of Culture and Youth in organizing them, and referred to the historical role of Sheikh Zayed in caring for education and spreading schools as a first step to stimulate and encourage reading and motivate all UAE citizens to read, including his sponsorship of the opening of the Book Fair in 1981 in the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi, and his passage through all sections of the exhibition as an expression of his interest in the book, and he ordered him to purchase all the displayed books and distribute them to the Emirati libraries and the various authorities in the country, and these books were the nucleus of establishing the House of Books in Abu Dhabi.

Al-Hamli asserted that choosing the slogan “My Family Reads” is a smart choice, because one reads usually by himself and himself. This slogan has a connotation and a goal represented in the family meeting on a book in which it discusses the dedication of the role of fathers and mothers in accustoming children to reading, in light of the power of electronic devices and everyone’s preoccupation. With it, with this slogan, the book becomes an intellectual request around which the family gathers and meets in an atmosphere of familiarity and interest.

He added that "the current generation reads in a different manner, and spends long hours in an unstructured manner," considering that there is a generation of young people who have returned to reading and writing, and perhaps more voraciously than the previous generation, and that this generation has the sense of reading and curiosity to read everything new, whether paper or electronic, and languages Several internationals, taking advantage of the development of social networks.

Al Hameli concluded: “The UAE has a unique reading law with distinct materials that imposes obligations on government and semi-government agencies, and stimulates publishing and other sectors, with the need to activate the National Reading Fund and motivate civil society institutions to contribute to the national project for reading as a general framework.”

For his part, Ali Saeed Al-Kaabi said that the first goal that the leadership of Sheikh Zayed focused on during the founding stage was to focus on the value of knowledge and building the human being as a bet on him in building the modern state, consolidating a culture that future generations would follow, leading to the exploration of Mars as one of the fruits of this The approach followed today by the wise leadership of the state.

Al-Kaabi emphasized that thinking about the year of reading and its law since 2015 came based on Emirati reaction and ambition to change the reality of reading at the Arab level for the better, leading to spreading the culture of reading and establishing it in the country, and raising community and family awareness of the importance of reading, based on accurate studies of the reality of reading in society. And on the family, he expected an increase in the rate of reading within the family, in the context of building reading role models whose behaviors are reflected on children.

Al Kaabi pointed to the importance of the UAE being a spot of light and a beacon of hope and salvation in a troubled region threatened by chaos and shared by conflicts, in search of the development and development of youth, human forces and human awareness, through ambitious laws such as the Reading Law, a reflection of the fact that the UAE is a sustainable country that establishes a legal framework for reading that supports the tremendous efforts it has made. The state seeks to govern it within the framework of the continuity of its future civilizational project, through a law linked to a decimal plan for reading, to double the number of books read and produced, and to stimulate publication in order to contribute to increasing knowledge production.

He concluded: “Reading is a skill to be acquired, and we suffer from a weakness in acquiring this skill among students and children for linguistic, technical and educational reasons, in the face of its difficulties, for which we must find innovative solutions.”

As for the writer Hamad Al Hammadi, he praised the initiatives of the United Arab Emirates and the role of the wise leadership in the field of reading and stimulating cultural and reading awareness, considering that this matter is not new, but rather extends since the beginning of its establishment, to affect the behavioral change of society, which was applied by the late Sheikh Zayed, which is understood in the field of Reading, especially among children, youth, and emerging generations, and even employees of government agencies who are targeted by stimulating behavioral change, to create an appropriate environment, time and place for reading, and to increase the dose of knowledge in society.

Al-Hammadi pointed to the importance of the inclusiveness of the slogan “My Family Reads” in expanding the scope of reading, so that it includes all members of society and the family, considering that the “Corona” crisis contributed to supporting reading and supporting the interaction of children and parents in reading, and the importance of this in activating the distance education system in light of the pandemic .

Al-Hammadi pointed out the importance of ways to encourage reading, by stimulating it for children, as if we reward the child for doing good reading behaviors, especially evening reading, which is the easiest for the psychological and behavioral formation of children, through bedtime readings, as well as visiting exhibitions. Books with children, and linking them with literary reading to form their vocabulary, considering that specialized reading is very important in the event that the child has a talent that he seeks to develop with relevant reading.

He believed that the existence of the Reading Law was aimed at sustainability, while its articles sought to stimulate reading activities and innovative initiatives by encouraging and enticing in a way that changes the behavior that hinders reading, especially among government agencies, and he believed, in conclusion, that “the reading law encourages publishing and supports publishing houses by canceling some fees and providing some Motivations, which is reflected positively on the writers themselves in order to preserve their rights and encourage their creativity, encouraging readers to provide knowledge in any language, with a focus on the Arabic language as an identity and a mother tongue, so the biggest challenge is the balance between hobby and work and in the forefront of the readers ».
