The so-called classic protection is being tried in court for the first time.

The Swedish Academy believes that poems and quotes by Verner von Heidenstam, Esaias Tegnér and Viktor Rydberg have been grossly violated by appearing on the Nazi site Nordfront.se.

The Classic Protection gives the Academy the right to sue for classic works whose copyright has expired.

During the first day of the district court's main hearings, the Swedish Academy's lawyer spent a couple of hours presenting why they believe that Nordfront constitutes a context that is “grossly offensive” for the works that appear on the site.

Know about a million

The poems have been in a box with "today's quote" which was in Nordfront.se's left column and have thus appeared next to a long series of publications with headlines such as "'The Holocaust' is a scam!", "Congratulations Adolf Hitler 124 years - swastika flag at the top ”and pictures of Adolf Hitler.

The Swedish Academy demands that the district court prohibit Nordfront and the Nordic resistance movement from reproducing the works on the website with a fine of one million kronor.

The associations Nordic Resistance Movement and Nordfront believe that the quotations have been reproduced verbatim and not distorted, which cannot constitute a violation of copyright as a whole or classic protection specifically.

Separated from articles

The associations' representative Henrik Johansson also believes that the articles and quotations have been clearly separated from each other on the page and therefore cannot be linked to the articles that the Academy believes.

- In addition, the quote section has been graphically screened.

A large green frame distinguishes the quotes both at the top and bottom and it says "quote".

It is not only graphically shielded, but also where it is located.

The frame does not follow when scrolling, he says.

Johansson also says that many of the articles that the Swedish Academy uses as examples have already been removed or changed by Nordfront.

Negotiations continue on Thursday.
