In a traffic accident with several trucks at the end of a traffic jam on the A44 in East Westphalia-Lippe, three occupants of a car were killed.

According to the first findings of the police, the car was wedged between trucks on Tuesday afternoon.

Countless pieces of debris on the roadway and a completely deformed wreck can be seen in photos from the scene of the accident.

Apparently, a traffic jam was the starting point, as the police said.

One truck stopped in the right-hand lane, a second dodged onto the hard shoulder.

Behind it, the momentous accident occurred: A third truck hit the car and pushed it into the rear of the stationary first truck.

The A44 was in the direction of Kassel between the Bad Wünnenberg-Haaren motorway junction and the Lichtenau junction and was completely closed for almost twelve hours.

The lock was lifted shortly before midnight, as a police spokeswoman said.

The dead are the occupants of a car, said a spokesman for the Bad Wünnenberg volunteer fire department.

An injured truck driver was released from the driver's cab by the firefighters using hydraulic tools.

The extensive rescue work and the accident record lasted into the night of Wednesday.

When the blockade was lifted shortly before midnight, the traffic jam in front of the accident site was about eight kilometers long, according to the police.

The police had repeatedly called on motorists via Twitter to avoid the area extensively.
