The backlog of vaccinations continues to grow.

For the first time in Germany, more than four million vaccine doses are unused - more than a third of the amount of vaccine delivered.

This is based on data from the Robert Koch Institute and calculations by WELT.

After that, the federal and state governments still have around 4,334,000 cans in their warehouses.

On a seven-day average, the backlog is around 3.2 million cans.

The backlog is higher at the beginning of the week because less is inoculated on the weekend.

Also, the districts and cities that operate the vaccination centers may not have reported all vaccinations.

To date, Germany has received a total of 12.5 million vaccine doses.

Around 5.5 million Germans or 6.7 percent of the population have so far received their first vaccination, 2.6 million or 3.1 percent of the population also received their second vaccination.

Several federal states will start vaccinating teachers, educators, seriously ill and other people in vaccination group 2 this week.
