18 years ago to the day, on March 9, 2003, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan won a by-election in Siirt, in south-eastern Turkey.

This victory immediately enabled the founder of the AKP - the Justice and Development Party - to take up the post of Prime Minister, four months after his party's surprise victory in the legislative elections.

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan - now president - has never left power again.

18 is the age of majority, the age to vote.
