In order to enable quick evacuation from the tsunami in Otsuchi Town, Iwate Prefecture, which was severely damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake, an evacuation staircase leading to a highway was completed, and residents confirmed the evacuation route.

In the Great East Japan Earthquake, there were many cases in which residents who did not have a hill nearby climbed the slopes of the highway to evacuate from the tsunami.

For this reason, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism is proceeding with the installation of evacuation stairs leading to the Sanriku coastal road on the hill, which is being developed as a reconstruction road so that people can evacuate from the tsunami quickly and safely.

Of these, the evacuation stairs were completed in the Sakuragicho district of Otsuchi Town, and a briefing session was held for local residents on the 6th.

First, after the town disaster prevention officer explained, "I want you to have an image of an emergency and use it in the future," the participants actually climbed the stairs and confirmed the route to the evacuation site.

The man who participated said, "When the tsunami comes, we will compete for 1 minute and 1 second, so it is nice to have more evacuation stairs nearby."

Mr. Yasuetsu Tanaka, director of the Otsuchi Crisis Management Office, said, "This is not the end, but we would like to make it known on disaster prevention maps so that it can be used in an emergency and utilize it in evacuation drills and workshops."
