[Explanation] The 2021 National Two Sessions are being held in Beijing. At the same time, China's new crown vaccination is also being carried out in an orderly manner.

On March 4, Gao Fu, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and director of the China Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in an exclusive interview with a reporter from China News Agency that the vaccination strategy should be dynamically adjusted according to the situation of the vaccine and the epidemic.

[Explanation] Gao Fu pointed out that China will mainly control the epidemic through non-pharmaceutical interventions in 2020, and the control effect has been significant, but it is still not considered safe.

Generally speaking, the epidemic is still developing. We still call on everyone to fight the vaccine in order to establish herd immunity.

[Explanation] At present, China has approved 4 new crown vaccines, and the number of people vaccinated has reached tens of millions.

But Gao Fu emphasized that the proportion of immunized population is still low.

He pointed out that if an immune barrier is to be established, it may be as early as mid-2022.

From the perspective of our production capacity, as we will have other vaccines to follow up, it should reach 70%-80% in our country (inoculation ratio). We expect that it should be as fast as the middle of next year (2022), and if it is slow, it will be next year. (2022) The end of the year.

Our production capacity should still keep up.

It also depends on other comprehensive aspects. The first is to produce and turn it into a product, which is acceptable to the public and able to quickly continue.

[Explanation] The new coronavirus is mutating, so does vaccination still have an effect?

Can the speed of vaccination catch up with the speed of virus mutation?

Gao Fu believes that although the virus has mutated, it never leaves its origins, and the most critical part has not changed.

For example, for this virus to invade the human body, it needs the receptors of our cells, and the part that binds to the receptors cannot change.

If our vaccine is aimed at specifically targeting the receptor-binding part of the virus invading cells, then our vaccine is still useful, so most vaccines include this part.

According to preliminary results, although the titer of vaccines in various countries has declined, at least in vitro experiments are still effective.

[Explanation] In addition, Gao Fu also emphasized that the most critical impact of virus mutation on the new crown vaccine is the durability of the vaccine. This issue has not yet been determined. The new crown vaccine may require regular vaccination like the flu vaccine.

If the virus has mutated, do we need to adjust it immediately and make a new vaccine (research and development).

Just like the influenza virus vaccine, we change the influenza virus vaccine every year, but we have never put the influenza vaccine in the phase I, II, and III clinical trials every year.

Then the coronavirus is likely to enter such a state.

[Explanation] Gao Fu said that at the same time of vaccination, the immunization planning strategy will also be dynamically adjusted.

For example, from the very beginning, China was called a key group. At the beginning, we were about 50 million (persons), divided into two levels, the first level was more than 20 million (persons), including, for example, direct contact with customs ( People).

At the second level, there will be some key positions in the future, such as security.

Then after this level is finished, what should be queued at the next level, which must be dynamically adjusted according to the vaccine situation at any time.

[Explanation] Gao Fu pointed out that another example of dynamically adjusting the immunization planning strategy is the cautious implementation of the new crown vaccine for the elderly.

[Concurrent] Gao Fu, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Director of China Center for Disease Control and Prevention

Can I get the vaccine, when and how?

It has always been a balance between risk and return.

If the epidemic in China is not well controlled, and the elderly and people with underlying diseases are exposed to risks, and may be at risk of infection at any time, we will definitely rank first without hesitation.

The entire epidemic situation in China is now well controlled. We have no or very little data on the elderly, so we are more cautious. We have to consider when the elderly will fight. These are some of our dynamic adjustment factors.

[Explanation] At this two sessions, Gao Fu participated in or led a number of proposals, including a proposal to call attention to scientific and technological innovation and vaccine research and development, and to establish a national vaccine research center.

He said that he hopes to raise public awareness of public health by participating in the two sessions of the country.

I am both a scientific researcher and a public health worker. I hope that participation in politics like ours can improve our country's public health science and technology innovation. If we can achieve this goal, I am very pleased.

In particular, the people can understand some of the work that (us) can do, especially things like public health incidents. If such public health incidents, if the people don’t understand, there are many things we can’t do.
