EL MUNDO journalist Pedro Simón has been awarded the King of Spain Prize in the Press category, for the report 'Hugo, historia de un corazón'.

The jury of the XXXVIII edition of the

King of Spain International Journalism Awards

, which has met for the first time telematically due to the covid, has highlighted Simón's work in this report published in the daily magazine

Papel

that counted the wait , the transplant and the recovery of a baby, Hugo, who received a heart in September 2019 and has been waiting for him since April of that year.

A story in which Simón glimpses a new life "that can be summed up in 19 staples, the most beautiful wound in the world," he says in the report and that has been highlighted by these awards that are awarded annually since 1983, the year in which they were created by the EFE Agency and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (Aecid).

The jury has highlighted the "masterful rhythm" of this countdown

that not only explains the transplant process, but also manages to transfer emotions without falling into tears.

Simón is, according to the members of the jury, a "just winner" for his prose and linguistic resources full of originality.

After hearing the news, and when Simón was writing and "was saturated and was going to go out to see his parents", he has left everything, as he has told Efe.

He immediately called his son who was studying and the two celebrated "like an Atleti goal."

"It was wonderful. We hugged each other singing a goal," he

commented, once the award was known for this information about Hugo.

He continues to speak regularly with Hugo's parents, he spent half a year with them and "indestructible" ties were generated, he points out, because his family was in the Canary Islands and the family practically here was him.

"

We speak regularly because after being in contact for half a year indestructible ties were generated

. We speak regularly, they come to Madrid, and the boy is made a bull. I think that instead of a heart they have put a Mercedes engine and his parents are very happy. "

Simón (Madrid, 1971) is a journalist for the newspaper EL MUNDO.

He began working on

La Opinion de Zamora

.

He has received various awards, including the 2015 Ortega y Gasset Award and the Best Journalist of the Year Award, awarded by the Madrid Journalists Association in 2016.

Recently, a week ago, he received the Primavera de Novela award a week ago for

Los Ingratos

, which comes out on April 7.

The purpose of the King of Spain International Journalism Awards is to recognize the work of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking journalism professionals from the countries that make up the Ibero-American community and from the nations with which Spain maintains historical ties.
