• Coronavirus The Government confirms almost 30,000 deaths in residences from Covid-19 since March 2020

  • Covid-19. First day since October without contagion in the residences of the Valencian elderly

  • Live: last minute on the coronavirus

Only 2% of nursing homes in Spain had a confirmed case of coronavirus in mid-February,

when before the start of vaccination they reached 12.4%

, according to an Imserso report on the incidence of the pandemic.

In fact, the vaccine has contributed to a 95% reduction in infections in residences between January and February.

If in the week of January 18 there were 4,439 older people infected with coronavirus in residences, a month later there

were only 215

, which means a reduction of 95% in the number of cases.

Most communities began to vaccinate their residents in the last days of December 2020 or early 2021. If in the penultimate week of last year there were 12.4% of residences with a positive case,

the percentage dropped to 2 % in the third week of February this year

.

This has also had an effect on mortality.

If in the week of January 25, 719 residents died from Covid-19, in the week of February 15 there were 157;

that is, deaths from coronavirus

fell

by

78% in less than a month.

19,549 deaths in residences

These data are deeply encouraging, especially if it is taken into account that nursing homes were the areas hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic

in the first wave with truly dramatic situations.

According to data from the Imserso, from March 14, 2020 until today, a total of 19,549 elderly residents have died from Covid-19, confirmed.

To these should be added another 9,859 deaths suspected of coronavirus without being confirmed, which would raise the total of deaths in residences to 29,408.

Another data that gives a good account of the positive evolution of the pandemic in nursing homes is that there are five autonomous communities where, currently,

there is not a single resident infected in these centers.

They are Asturias, Cantabria, Murcia, Navarra, La Rioja and Valencia

, which registered on Monday its first day since October without contagion in residences.

Black january

Most of the deaths occurred during the first wave of the pandemic, between March 14 and June 22, when 19,835 people died in residences, 9,976 of them confirmed.

Those deaths add another 6,305 in the rest of 2020, for a total of 26,140 in the year.

That is,

in this third wave of 2021, another 3,286 people have died in residential centers

, most of them in the month of January because from the second week of February the effects of the vaccination began to be noticed.

The fatality rate (percentage of deaths per number of confirmed cases)

was 23.17% in 2020 and 18.7% so far this year

.

According to Imserso data, since the beginning of the pandemic there have been 86,219 positives in residences.
