The L214 association noted this Tuesday by a bailiff and two European deputies the non-compliance with the regulations on the transport of turkeys upon the arrival of several trucks at the slaughterhouse Les Volailles de Blancafort, in the Cher.

This establishment, which belongs to the LDC poultry group and sells under the Le Gaulois brand, had already been targeted by an L214 investigation in December 2020.

Based on a video, L214 had identified major malfunctions on the site and also problems concerning the transport of birds.

The prefecture of Cher then gave the company 48 hours to comply, before saying it was satisfied with the measures taken by the slaughterhouse.

Too small transport crates

"The boxes used are still not in accordance with the regulations and have not been changed," nevertheless said the director of investigations of L214, SĂ©bastien Arsac.

"The boxes are just the size of the animals' bodies, whereas the regulations provide that there is space above the heads when they are standing."

“There are crowded turkeys (…), it's a lot of heat stress, of suffering.

This is why we see full rendering baskets, these are turkeys that did not resist transport, ”he added.

For this operation carried out in the early morning, the association for the defense of animals was accompanied by MEPs Caroline Roose (EELV) and Manuel Bompard (LFI), both members of the committee of inquiry on the transport of animals of the European Parliament.

"Very quickly, we could see that it was not in line with European regulations," said the deputy, after the passage of the trucks.

L214 does not want to "stop there"

" It's not acceptable.

(…) We must ask ourselves the question of animal welfare.

Practices and rules must evolve accordingly ”, reacted Manuel Bompard after being received by the management of the slaughterhouse.

The latter refused elected officials access to the industrial part of the site.

For its part, L214 is now awaiting the official report drawn up by the bailiff and does not intend to "stop there".

"This will allow us to complete the complaint lodged in December and to report back to the European Commission, which is currently looking at the application of the regulations on the ground," explained SĂ©bastien Arsac.
